Thanks for this wonderfully inspiring and thought-provoking profile Meg! Also makes me want to get more chickens :)

How cool that you already have some. I'm considering a small handful for the backyard—Alchemist's are so beautiful too.

Our town permits a small flock of four backyard chickens. It's been wonderful to have daily fresh eggs and we have lots of neighbours' children come by to their "local petting zoo". Chickens are definitely much easier to keep than almost any other pet:)

I think we’re also allowed four if we apply for a permit and pay a small fee. I need to figure out the best way to contain them. I think that’s my early spring project!

Yes, spring is a great time to get started. We built our own coop from mostly salvaged wood (including old church tables), which was not too difficult. There are lots of helpful websites from which you can gather ideas druing the winter months :)

Thanks for your quick response and one more question do you ship worldwide like Afrika specifically Ghana? 🙏🏾

Just to be clear, I wrote this piece about Franchesca Duval, and it is her farm, not mine. So you will have to check on their website above. I was able to confirm that they ship within the US, but I don't know about worldwide. But they can answer your questions through the contact page on their website. Best of luck!

Thank you so much. I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you for the hopefulness. We had chickens for a time, including roosters. A small flock. They endeared themselves to me.

I lived at a community farm for a few months several years ago. Much to my delight, I was given the responsibility of collecting eggs and feeding the chickens. I called them my “ladies” and was always delighted when they would come running out to greet me each morning. It’s hard not to be endeared to a flock of hens running pell-mell toward you, even if you know it’s probably about the food!
